The plan, in 1959, was
to order a fleet of new
Atlanteans. These
could not be delivered
in time, so instead a
small number of PD3s
with extended Orion
bodies were
purchased. Looking
like the existing PD2’s,
but seating 70, these
vehicles were often
referred to as
“spaceships” because
of their size.
The final update in this news column
is that the PD3 has now arrived and
has its own web page that you can
access here
UPDATE:
CPPTD IS OFFERED
A PD3 “spaceship”
PD1 Restoration
Commences
The “Tuesday Gang” (Dave Wilds,
Clive Wilkin, Doug Stewart, Richard
Finch and Kevin Warrington) have
started work on restoring our 1947
PD1 to its former glory. Although
very sad looking, the bus is in
remarkably good structural
condition despite being involved in
many staged road accidents while
at the Fire Service College. Find
further updates on our PD1 page
We intend running in 2011,
but we need some help!
Buses will run on the LAST SUNDAY of
each month until the end of August. Our
operational base for these events is the
large car park at the Castle (close to the
D-Day museum). Services run from the
Hard (Dockyard) to Eastney connecting
the principle attractions. There is no
charge to travel on these services. We
usually have a static exhibit at the Castle
car park as well along with display boards
with details of our project and
membership forms.
PLEASE NOTE: this service is operated
entirely by volunteers and is subject to
availability of vehicles and crew and to
late cancellation, curtailment or alteration.
You are advised to check with us (see
contacts page) if intending to travel long
distance specifically to join these events.
YOUR HELP IS SOUGHT: As we cannot
charge for these services or accept any
donations on the vehicle, the cost to our
organisation in running these services is
substantial. There is an opportunity for
local businesses to advertise on our
vehicles, or to sponsor the summer
services. We bring a great deal of
enjoyment to the visitors to Portsmouth
and Southsea; can you help to ensure
this can continue? If so, please contact
the Friend’s Chairman on our contacts
page
